AHR collaborated on an Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) project aimed at increasing vegetable farmer profitability through integrated crop management (ICM). This involved research and training in:
- appropriate methods for management of key insect pests and diseases
- a commercial clean potato seed production system
- integration of modern vegetable agronomy systems
Why study this?
The aim was to improve the livelihoods and food security of smallholder vegetable farmers in the Southern Philippines, an area affected by frequent typhoons, widespread insect pest and disease issues, and poor access to modern vegetable varieties and cropping inputs.
Where to next?
Resources produced in the project can be used by farmers to help increase their productivity. They will also help in the development of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) protocols in a new project that aims to increase the supply of safe vegetables to consumers in the Philippines.
Agronomy and integrated pest management (IPM) best practice guides were developed for vegetable farmers and advisors. The guides focus on key vegetable crops, and are available in English, Cebuano, Tagalog and Waray languages.
