Our scientists specialise in soil health, irrigation, crop nutrition, pest and disease management and postharvest handling, helping industry build robust crop production systems from the ground up.

The AHR communication team delivers technical information effectively to growers, advisors and industry.

We are proud to announce that our research scientist, Stephanie Tabone, has been awarded a Nuffield Australia scholarship supported by Hort Innovation and Applied Horticultural Research.

Stephanie Tabone from AHR is awarded her Nuffield Australia scholarship by Robert Bradley, Chair of Nuffield Australia, and Bianca Cairns, her supporter from Hort Innovation.

Stephanie will investigate the use of legumes as an alternative nitrogen source for vegetable cropping systems, exploring the factors that drive nitrogen release and the practical strategies that can be used to sync the release with the nitrogen needs of a succeeding vegetable crop.

Stephanie says growers have experienced rising input costs, changes in climatic extremes and increasing consumer demands for more sustainably grown produce, requiring them to become more resilient and able to adapt to these emerging trends.

"Nitrogen fertilisers have a large greenhouse gas emissions footprint through the manufacturing process, transport and in-field use, highlighting the need for alternative nitrogen solutions," Stephanie says.

She hopes to visit researchers from Auburn University in the US, the ICAR Central Soil Salinity Research Institute in Karnal, India, and Aarhus University in Denmark. She says these institutions have conducted research looking at nitrogen release from legume residues using different management practices and predictive models.

AHR is proudly celebrating 25 years in the business of helping Australian growers improve their soils, crops and profits. From the AHR team, thank you and we look forward to continuing our support for Australia’s fantastic Horticulture Industries.
