Communications Assistant

About the role
We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Communications Assistant to join our team and
support a range of projects focused on innovation and sustainability in Australian and global
horticulture.
This position is suitable to a recent graduate or someone with 1-2 years’ experience with strong
writing skills and an interest in horticulture/agriculture, science communication, or sustainability.
You’ll work closely with our Communications Manager and project teams to help produce engaging,
accurate and accessible content that showcases the work of our researchers and partners.
This role offers a fantastic opportunity to learn about horticultural RD&E (research, development and
extension), develop your communication skills, and be part of a friendly and collaborative consultancy.
Location:
Sydney based, however remote also possible
Key tasks include:
Support the production of communication materials
Assist with maintaining project websites and digital platforms
Support project-specific communication outputs
Assist with graphic design using for example, the Adobe Create Suite, Canva etc
Track communication deadlines and help keep content calendars up to date
Help maintain communication and resource databases
Support the implementation of AHR’s communication plan
What we are looking for
Essential:
Good written communication skills
Ability to manage time and organise tasks effectively
Willingness to learn and contribute to a team
Enthusiastic, curious, and keen to develop skills in science communication
Ability to translate complex texts to plain English
Experience using platforms like Mailchimp, Squarespace, Canva or social media schedulers
Willingness to travel to events, sometimes interstate, occasionally
Relevant tertiary qualification in either communications, journalism or agricultural sciences
Desirable:
Interest in agriculture, food production, science or the environment
Experience in podcast and video editing
Experience/ with willingness to learn digital storytelling tools, for example Shorthand
Key skills and attributes
