Co-designing the future of weed management

About 35 growers and industry representatives came together in Bacchus Marsh last week for a co-design workshop for the Next Generation Weed Management project (BY23002), a Hort Frontiers initiative co-funded by FarmTech Australia, Tripod Farmers Group, and the Australian Government, and led by AHR.

The day brought together a cross-section of the horticulture industry to explore how AI, robotics, and automation can transform weed control.

A highlight was a live demonstration of the Carbon Robotics LaserWeeder, which showcased the potential of precision, non-chemical weed management systems.

Project lead Anne Nolan (AHR) said the workshop was a valuable opportunity to bring growers into the innovation process early.

“These discussions are critical to ensuring growers needs are helping shape the direction of this project," Anne said.

"This project is about more than just testing technology, it’s about helping growers adapt with confidence as AI and robotics become part of everyday farming"

Looking ahead, Anne said insights gathered during the session will help keep the project focused on delivering practical, effective solutions.
