Summary
Poor diets are a primary cause of malnutrition and the leading cause of diseases worldwide. Globally, fruit and vegetable intakes are far below the recommended levels and this research will increase the body of knowledge on dietary patterns, barriers to desirability, accessibility, affordability , and availability through cost-effective solutions that will increase the year-round supply of a diverse range of safe, affordable, nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables.
This Initiative is a programme based on six components of the food system (consumer behaviour, seed systems, production, postharvest, value chains, enabling environment) and aims to use an end-to-end approach to increase fruit and vegetable intake and in turn improve diet quality, nutrition and health outcomes while also improving livelihoods, empowering women and youth and mitigating negative environmental impacts. AHR leads Work Package 4 on postharvest and is involved in cross cutting activities with the other food system components.
