Summary
Fruit quality remains a key challenge for the Australian avocado industry, with consumer acceptability directly tied to demand and sales.
Applied Horticultural Research is contributing to a national project led by Avocados Australia that monitors fruit quality across the supply chain, from retail shelves and wholesale markets to ripening centres. The project aims to lift retail acceptability from 73% to 83% of fruit meeting the industry standard of less than 10% internal defects.
Our role includes collecting and assessing retail samples in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, supply chain monitoring at wholesalers and ripening distribution centres, and providing targeted feedback to packers and retailers. Results are shared with the broader industry through the Avocados Best Practice Resource Hub to support continual improvement in quality management.
