Monitoring Avocados in Hong Kong

The Avocado International Retail Quality Benchmarking project (AV24015, funded by Hort Innovation through the avocado research and development levy) is officially underway, and we’re pleased to report that the first on-ground activities in Hong Kong have now been successfully completed.

As part of the project’s launch, Adam Goldwater and Henry Hyde (AHR) travelled to Hong Kong to meet with retailers, importers and wholesalers, gaining valuable insights into how Australian avocados move through the supply chain from port to shelf.

During the visit, the team trained local samplers, supported the first round of retail assessments, and established processes for consistent data collection going forward.

These initial assessments mark an important milestone for the project, providing the first real-world snapshot of fruit quality and handling practices in-market. Early feedback has been positive, with strong engagement from supply chain partners and enthusiasm to collaborate on quality improvement opportunities.

With Hong Kong assessments now underway, and Kuala Lumpur next in line, the project will continue to link retail quality outcomes with supply chain data, supported by the development of an interactive dashboard to give exporters timely market insights.

This project has been funded by Hort Innovation, using the avocado research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.
