ACIAR digital export traceability Vietnam

About the project

Project Partner
Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research

Duration
2025 - 2029

Summary

The project aims to improve incomes for farmers in Vietnam, who are experiencing low prices due to an oversupplied market.

The initiative is working mango and dragon fruit farmer communes in Son La province to improve agronomic and postharvest practices, introduce branding and packaging, achieve recognised food safety certifications and introduce software for traceability. The project team will connect farmers with fruit distributors, retailer and export agents to help them sell high-quality, traceable fruit at premium prices.

Research will identify which methods can cost-effectively improve the marketability of fruit and document the impact of project interventions on household incomes. Activities intentionally include women and ethnic minority groups, focus on improving the pack-out rate of grade 1 fruit, introduce technology, and develop new domestic value chains throughout the 2026 season. Expansion to export markets is planned for 2027.

The project is led by AHR and delivered in partnership with local research organisations:

  • Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute: Value chain research and field trials

  • Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute: VietGAP certification and farmer support

  • Vietnam National University of Agriculture: Socioeconomic research
